Mexican colleagues help tag a ray!

By Robert Hueter, Kim Bassos-Hull, 23rd May 2013

A successful tagging! Today our research team placed a 6-month pop-up archival satellite tag on spotted eagle ray number 389. This large female ray weighed 64.4 kg and measured at 162 cm from wing tip to wing tip. On board to help was Dr Juan Carlos Perez Jimenez and his graduate student Laura Luz Alonso Rocha from El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) in Campeche, Mexico. They were participating with our research surveys in order to learn more about tagging and to get some hand-on time working with rays. Hoping to report some interesting results once this tag pops off – stay tuned!
