The Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF) communication team is comprised of a small group who deliver digital and print communication materials focused on marine science and conservation. The primary objective is to communicate the work of the SOSF and its project leaders, as well as to nurture awareness and appreciation for the marine environment. The daily success of the communication team is dependent upon the creative and cohesive energy of the team. In addition to specific objectives for each role, there are a number of shared responsibilities. Therefore, exceptional communication, collaboration, and organisational skills are essential.

The primary role of the Visual Content Designer is content creation to assist with the populating of the SOSF website and social media platforms, and in general, curating the aesthetics of the foundation’s outputs. The role of Visual Content Designer is a full-time position based at the SOSF Shark Education Centre in Kalk Bay. The Visual Content Designer will work as an integral part of the Communication team, and report to the Content Manager.


Key responsibilities


  • Work for an international non-profit organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland: the Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF);
  • Act as a team member of the SOSF communication team, based at the SOSF Shark Education Centre in Kalk Bay, South Africa
  • Work closely and collaborate with communication teams on all the SOSF’s visual communication projects;
  • Work and coordinate with scientists, conservationists, educators, institutions and organisations worldwide;
  • Responsible for creating design solutions that have a high visual impact;
  • Developing design briefs by gathering information and data through research;
  • Thinking creatively to produce new ideas and concepts;
  • Demonstrating illustrative skills with rough sketches;
  • Keeping abreast of emerging technologies in new media, particularly design programs such as the Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, etc.;
  • Design necessary graphics (e.g., infographics, maps, illustrations) for website, social networks and publications, and SOSF campaigns, in both print and digital format;
  • Assist with production of annual report with scientific editor;
  • Assist with production of Save Our Seas magazine with scientific editor;
  • Design and coordinate production of pamphlets, posters, banners, etc.;
  • Produce visual content for the SOSF’s website and social media channels in coordination with editorial team;
  • Design on photographic exhibitions;
  • Assist with selection, sourcing and editing of imagery required for all the SOSF’s visual communication projects;
  • Collaborate with the SOSF Communications team and web designers on design and maintenance of websites managed by the Save Our Seas Foundation;
  • Participate in general SOSF needs and output requirements;
  • Ensure high quality and consistent visual style across all SOSF media and products.


Shared Duties (with all staff)


  • Liaising with vendors as necessary for supplies, resources and services;
  • Answering the phone and fielding enquiries;
  • Participating in the annual peer review and goal setting;
  • Coordinating logistics (set-up and break down) for special events hosted by Save Our Seas Foundation;




  • Tertiary education degree in the field of Visual Communications or Graphic Design;
  • Strong portfolio with editorial experience (web, infographic, magazine and/or books rather than experience designing adverts, packaging and graphics);
  • Minimum of three years professional experience;
  • South African nationality or valid South African work visa at time of application and employment;
  • Extended Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop and Illustrator skills and experience;
  • Open-minded team player who is happy to collaborate on design work;
  • Enjoys content, reading and collaboration with editorial team;
  • Artistic capacity and strong verbal, visual and written communication skills;
  • Ability to manage time and stay on schedule is important;
  • Experience working with photographic material and the ability to understand photographic story-telling;
  • Experience with web design and content management systems (preferentially WordPress);
  • Experience with iOS Application developments (non-essential);
  • Interest in the environment, conservation and marine realm;
  • Keen desire to learn and share their knowledge with the team.
  • Experience with video editing for SOSF news updates and social media posts (non-essential)




  • Reports directly to the SOSF communication team’s Content Manager, or any other person appointed by the CEO of the SOSF;
  • Workplace is located at the SOSF Shark Education Centre building in Kalk Bay, Western Cape, South Africa;
