On Thursday 6th December, the Environmental Education Unit within the Ministry of Education held the annual award ceremony for the Eco-School achievements. MCSS education officer Abi March was delighted to be invited to the National Theatre to watch the ceremony. The Eco-Schools programme promotes sustainable development through education by engaging students and teachers to work together to tackle different environmental issues in school and the community. For the last year crèches, primary and secondary schools across the Seychelles had been working towards achieving the different levels of the Eco-School status.
The hard work of the students and teachers was presented in portfolios which were on display at the award ceremony. We were delighted to see in many of the secondary schools portfolios, the press clippings from the Academy by the Sea programme and quotes from the students who attended. Shary Vidot from Anse Boileau Secondary School, who attended the very first Academy, said “Thanks to the Academy, I gained a wealth of knowledge on ecosystems and how to conserve them, and I ended up with two certificates!”

Well done to all the schools especially Beau Vallon Secondary School who achieved the Outstanding Eco-School award. This school played a big part in our Academy by the Sea programme with seven of their students joining us over the two programmes. Congratulations!
The Academy by the Sea programme, funded by the Save Our Seas Foundation, is obviously having a very positive effect on both individual students and their schools. We look forward to the Academy programme inspiring even more students in the coming year and helping schools achieve the Eco-School status!
