A manual that will help fishermen and workers in the aquaculture industry to identify sharks and report their presence in Albania’s territorial waters has been produced to support our project to protect these elasmobranchs. The manual, in both English and Albanian, was written with the help of Alen Soldo and Sarah Fowler and includes the kind of data that will be collected during the course of the project.
Once the manual was printed, the town of Shen Gjin was the first to distribute copies, especially to fishermen. There I gave a Powerpoint presentation on not only how to use the manual, but also the notable shark species in the region that need protection. The audience seemed fascinated by the information, but what interested me the most was that they knew nothing about the shark fishery or about international conventions or national legislation pertaining to sharks.
