Seychelles Festival of the Sea – Children’s Fun Day

By Abbie Hine, 25th November 2012

The Seychelles Festival of the Sea (SUBIOS) Children’s Fun Day was held the day following the prize giving for the artwork, poem and story competitions. It was certainly a day for happy faces and fun activities down on the beach. Save our Seas Foundation (SOSF) joined, Global Vision International (GVI), Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles (MCSS), Marine Parks Authority, and the Ministries of Environment and Education. The Ministry of Education showed their support for and collaboration with this SOSF’s marine education project here in Seychelles by displaying examples of books donated to all the schools last year. All the organisations had tents lining the beach where passers-by could learn more about the work we all do and also about the marine environment as a whole and we had all planned marine activities for the children. The array of activities was fantastic with huge effort put in by everyone.

The SOSF tent was the place for the colouring and jigsaw fans amongst the crowds. Movies, such as Shark Riddle, were also being shown in our tent and between viewings slide shows of photos from our school visits, children’s artwork and the stunning underwater world were shown. Those walking by the tents didn’t miss the message we were all trying to get across as we had volunteers writing marine messages and facts in chalk along the road.

Other activities available to the children during the day were; snorkel sessions, craft sessions using litter, face and body painting, assault courses, fat competitions, marine sand sculptures and much much more. A great day was had by all and the sun shone for us here in Seychelles.
