Originally from Gugulethu, Cape Town, Lihleli grew up with limited role models but was deeply influenced by his grandmother, who sparked his love for nature by taking him to the local library. There he developed a passion for books that showed marine life, indigenous plants, and animals. This sparked his interest in conservation and led to many trips with his grandmother to beaches and nature reserves near Gugulethu. After obtaining a degree in geography, environmental studies and political studies from the University of the Western Cape, he went on to obtain an Honours degree in political studies.
Lihleli later worked as a people and conservation officer at the Table Bay Nature Reserve, where he focused on community engagement, leading environmental education programmes and guided hikes. Working for the Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Education Centre allows him to share his passion for environmental education, particularly with young people in disadvantaged areas of Cape Town. His goal is to expand his impact by inspiring youth to pursue careers in environmental conservation. Lihleli loves to mentor young people, helping them to understand the importance of environmental stewardship and offering the support he lacked growing up. His passion for nature and commitment to youth empowerment are central to his mission of making a lasting impact on both the community and the environment.
