Kelsey grew up in a nature conservancy deep in the KwaZulu-Natal bush in South Africa, captivated by the natural world and her connection to it. Now based in Cape Town, she frequently finds herself exploring the kelp forests and mountains around the city. Her home, however, remains a special base that gives her access to coastal sand forests, deep rivers teeming with biodiversity, wildlife in its natural habitat, and thriving warm-water reefs where she free dives as often as she can. Many local communities rely on this environment to sustain their livelihoods, and this is where she first observed how important conservation is for enabling people and nature to co-exist in sustainable harmony.
Kelsey later studied visual communication design at Stellenbosch University, where she focused on the role design plays in raising awareness and inspiring action for environmental causes. After gaining experience in the corporate design industry for a few years, her desire to design for ecological awareness and impact was recognised when a door opened at the Save Our Seas Foundation.
‘I am grateful to experience how my love for the ocean fuels my creativity, which thus blends into my work,’ she says. ‘To let the beauty of what I love be what I do is true fulfilment for me.’
