On the beautiful island of Eleuthera, surrounded by clear blue Bahamian waters, The Island School brings together students from pre-K through Ph.D., and world-renowned researchers to create transformational learning experiences. By connecting primary research to education and outreach, The Island School creates unique opportunities for students and scientists to learn about native ecosystems and environmental sustainability through immersive, place-based experiences.
With their campus and the surrounding ocean as a laboratory, visitors can study, research, and live in a learning community dedicated to a more environmentally responsible and sustainable future. Here, students, educators, and researchers work side by side, connecting with the environment and engaging in the process of inquiry in order to discover sustainable solutions to real-world problems.
The Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF) partnership supports The Island School’s Community Engagement work. SOSF ongoing support ensures that The Island School’s unique educational programs continue to flourish, offering new opportunities to Bahamian students and positively impacting the local community.
Their Community Engagement program supports literacy growth and environmental education, provides nutritious food for children in the programs, and enhances vocational readiness through the Apprentice Program. The Apprentice Program is a paid six-week summer initiative that offers young Bahamians in South Eleuthera the opportunity to work closely with Island School staff, gaining valuable work experience and mentorship in specific trades and fields.
