Who I am

As a researcher, consultant and lecturer, I have built a career on protecting Nigeria’s coastal environment and the people who depend on it. With a strong background in fisheries science and marine conservation, I have worked on projects that bring science and communities together, focusing on biodiversity, sustainable fishing and the health of aquatic ecosystems. Beyond field work, I am deeply committed to teaching and mentoring the next generation of scientists. By guiding students and young researchers, I aim to ensure that knowledge is passed on and that conservation in Nigeria remains vibrant and innovative.

At the heart of my work is a simple belief: protecting marine life and supporting people go hand in hand. This approach drives every project I take on, including the urgent effort to safeguard Nigeria’s butterfly ray.

Where I work

Over the years, carrying out studies on fish diversity, population trends and the impact of fishing practices on vulnerable species has taken me to various parts of Nigeria’s coastline. This work not only generates valuable scientific knowledge, but also helps to shape practical conservation solutions that respect local livelihoods. By collaborating with government agencies, NGOs and fishing communities, I have gained a reputation for creating bridges between research and real-world change. This particular project centres on Badagry, in the far south-west of Nigeria.

What I do

Seret’s butterfly ray, a little-known but threatened species, has become a new focus of my work. Because it is often caught accidentally and rarely recorded, there is substantial risk that it will disappear unnoticed from Nigerian waters. I intend to reduce unnecessary mortality in the species and give it a better chance to recover by monitoring its presence at landing sites, mapping its habitat, conducting interviews with fishers and trialling fishing gear. Importantly, the project is designed not just to protect the ray, but also to support fishing communities by promoting practices that keep the seas healthier for everyone.
