Oceans, The Book

14th April 2010

Oceans: Threats to the Sea and What You Can Do To Turn the Tide is being officially released on Earth Day (April 22) as a companion book to the new DisneyNature film Oceans. The book is an anthology of new essays by thirty of the most intriguing ocean thinkers and doers out there compiled by Jon Bowermaster. Jon is a six-time grantee of the National Geographic Expeditions Council and has a passion for the sea.

His latest project brings together a variety of ocean legends including Sylvia Earle, Carl Safina, David de Rothschild, Paul Watson, Celine Cousteau as well as celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Pierce Brosnan and Hayden Panettiere. "I reached out to each of them individually to come up with a kind of ‘state of the ocean’ assessment of their particular speciality, whether it be the impact of environmental ills, threats to marine life or the politics involved in trying to preserve an at-risk resource."<!–more–>

The result is a comprehensive look at where our oceans are today, the biggest threats facing them and what we can do to make a difference in protecting this essential part of our planet. Save Our Seas is proud to be featured in the book and we hope it helps to raise awareness about the desperate plight of our oceans.

Perhaps it will help us put the upcoming Earth Day into perspective too as Jon notes on his blog: "I’ve been lobbying, quietly, that this time-round the day be labeled Ocean Day instead. In part because this is without statistical question more of an ocean planet than a continental one, and because I think right now around the world there is a tsunami wave of interest in all things “ocean,” particularly the threats to its health and its fisheries."
