The natural environments of D’Arros Island and St Joseph Atoll are among the most ecologically healthy and unique in Seychelles and in the world. More sea turtles come to nest on the beaches, more sharks, rays and fishes swarm over the coral reefs and more seabirds nest and roost in the trees than at any other island in the Amirantes Group. The Save Our Seas Foundation D’Arros Research Centre (SOSF–DRC) is tasked with preserving and showcasing the ecological integrity of these islands and their surrounding marine environment through research, monitoring, restoration and education.

Research Coordinator for the SOSF D’Arros Research Centre

Do you have experience in conservation research program design and project oversight? Are you passionate about sharing skills and a collaborative working environment? This is your chance to apply for a position in the SOSF-DRC team with opportunity for personal and professional growth, coordinating research activities, providing training in experimental design and scientific writing all while helping shape the future of conservation in Seychelles.

The position comes with free room and board as well as a monthly island shop allowance. The first contract will constitute a probationary period of up to six months.

OVERVIEW OF MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinate and undertake all core and targeted marine and terrestrial research projects
• Coordinate and undertake data entry and data management
• Coordinate the maintenance of lab buildings, field camp, vehicles, boats, lab equipment, dive gear and other DRC infrastructure and equipment
• Coordinate and develop DRC scientific outputs, reports, research agreements, MOUs and others
• Provide and encourage staff training and knowledge sharing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

• PhD in a relevant field (e.g., marine conservation, marine biology, ecology or zoology)
• Demonstrated fieldwork experience over multiple years
• Proven track record of project management and fieldwork planning
• Native / Fluent in both spoken and written English
• Certified PADI Advanced Open Water diver or equivalent with significant dive records (50+ dives)
• RYA Powerboat Level II or equivalent skipper’s license
• Proficient familiarity with software such as R, GIS, PRIMER and others
• Excellent skills in data analysis and data management
• Demonstrated proficiency of presenting in a scientific context
• Relevant publication record including at least one first author publication
• Demonstrated ability to live and work in remote places or difficult conditions
• Ability to actively contribute to tasks when working both independently and as a team member
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to work long hours when required
• Ability to respond to difficult, stressful or sensitive situations in a way that reduces or minimizes potential conflict, strives to maintain good working relationships characterized by respect and mutual regard
• Professional behaviour, self-motivated and organized
• Physically, medically and mentally fit

BENEFICIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Certified PADI Rescue diver or higher qualification
• Advanced powerboat skills
• Record of MSc and BSc student supervision
• Familiarity with marine engines
• Knowledge of the Seychelles marine conservation context and its stakeholders
• Hands on experience working with sharks, particularly handling and tagging
• Demonstrated involvement in collaborative research projects
• Demonstrated understanding of marine protected areas, zoning and marine management
• Record of previous involvement in marine scientific work in Seychelles
• Proficiency in other languages
• Any qualifications in 1st Aid
