Wavescape Surfboard Art Auction Raises R234 000 for Charity

10th December 2012

Each year the Wavescape Surf Festival hosts an Art Board exhibition and charity auction to raise funds for worthy causes. On Wednesday 5 December, 11 boards were auctioned, raising a record R234 000. The proceeds will go to Shark Spotters, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and Isiqalo Foundation’s Waves For Change programme.

The Wavescape Charity Auction took place at the new Woodstock Exchange, which was brimming with over 600 keen surfers, art enthusiasts and ocean minded supporters. Art Boards by Guy Tillim, Peter van Straaten, Kim Longhurst & Scott Robertson, Wim Botha, One Love Studio Isiqalo Board, Fuzzy Slipperz, Manuela Gray, Simon Berndt and Roger Ballen were auctioned – with a Brett Murray art board selling for R42,000.

A novel concept board was initiated at the event. The ‘Family Board’, which is an original John Whitmore from the mid 1960s, was auctioned and ceremoniously handed to the first surfer in a lineage of trust – symbolically linking the surfing family around the world. The recipient will document herself surfing on the board and will pass it on to fellow surfers with the proviso that it is returned in time for next year’s Wavescape Festival.

Ocean conservation and sustainability remain core motivations for Wavescape and its partners at the festival. The Save Our Seas Foundation is proud to be a supporting sponsor for the event.
