SHAWCO, the UCT Underwater Club and Save our Seas Shark Centre Team Up for Social Outreach

13th September 2012

On 12 September, the Save Our Seas Shark Centre teamed up with SHAWCO and the University of Cape Town’s Underwater Club to provide a marine education outing for 26 Grade 2 learners as part of their social outreach initiative.

The children and volunteers from SHAWCO and the UCT Underwater Club enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon of activities at the Save Our Seas Shark Centre in Kalk Bay, learning about marine environments and their importance.

Linda Fellowes, local author of the children’s novel “Nicole, the Surf is my Turf", had the children entertained with a book reading, which tells the story of the first recorded great white shark to swim all the way from South Africa to Australia and back again. The children were delighted to receive their own autographed copy of the book, donated to them by Save Our Seas Shark Centre.

After the book readying it was time for juice and hot dogs, which was kindly sponsored by Pick ‘n Pay Fish Hoek.

Once lunch was over, the kids helped to feed the hungry wire shark with recyclables. The Save Our Seas Shark Centre commissioned Streetwires (a local Fairtrade organization) to make a life-size wire shark with a hollow inside so it could be filled with rubbish to create awareness around National Cleanup Week this week.

Then it was off to the beach to explore the rockpools.

The Save Our Seas Shark Centre sincerely thanks all those involved in this marine education outing, including SHAWCO, which is a student community service organization that was established by UCT to improve the quality of life of previously disadvantage people in developing communities in Cape Town, the UCT Underwater Club, Linda Fellowes and Fish Hoek Pick ‘n Pay for sponsoring the children’s lunches.
