Save Our Seas Holiday Club Teaches Children about Marine Conservation

The Save Our Seas Shark Centre in Kalk Bay started off the new year with a fun and interactive 3-day Holiday Club for children aged between 6 and 11 years of age. The Shark Centre’s Holiday Club has grown in popularity over the last few years, and is designed to entertain and educate children on sharks and the marine environment.

On the first day of the Holiday Club, the children were entertained by an interactive discussion on sharks, enjoyed exploring the small aquarium at the Shark Centre, learned about rocky shores during a beach hunt and had fun swimming in the tidal pool at Dalebrook Beach.

On the second day of the Holiday Club, the children enjoyed a train ride to Muizenberg Beach, a coastal hike collecting marine treasures along the way, a swim and snorkel at the St. James tidal pool and a children’s shark documentary.

The final day of the Holiday Club involved an introductory presentation on rockpools and the rocky shore, followed by an exploration of the myriad of rockpools at the beach opposite the Centre. After another wonderful swim, the programme ended with the children building clay models of some of their favourite marine creatures, using shells and other debris they had collected over the 3-day Holiday Club to enhance their creations.
