New shark ‘Nicole’ is erected at Save Our Seas Shark Centre

Today, the Save Our Seas Shark Centre invited Grade 3’s from Star of the Sea Primary School to take part in the unveiling of the new fibreglass shark sculpture which was erected outside the centre. The shark has been named ‘Nicole’, in light of the first ever recorded White Shark to swim across an ocean from one continent to another.

Local artist and sculptor based in Kalk Bay, Chris Bladen (http://www.chrisbladen.com/), was commissioned to create a life size fibreglass White Shark for the centre. “I’m honoured to help create awareness of White Sharks and hope that people will one day see the beauty in them”, he says.

The Shark Centre offered a host of educational activities for the 38 disadvantaged scholars. They were treated to a short film and question session on sharks, as well as a book reading by Linda Fellowes (http://africanpenguin.co.za/), local author of the children’s novel ‘Nicole, in the Surf is my Turf’, where each child received a signed copy of the book donated by Save Our Seas. “The children are wonderful and so enthusiastic, it’s great to see they’re interested in conservation and willing to learn more about protecting our environment”, says Linda.
