Greening the Blue: Wavescape Surf Festival in Cape Town

3rd December 2012

The Wavescape Surf Festival is the premier surf and beach culture event in South Africa, now in the 9th year (www.wavescapefestival.com). The Cape Town leg of the Festival comprises three elements in 2012: a Surf Film Festival; the Art-Board Project Exhibition and Charity Auction; and Slide Night: an evening of talks by leaders in ocean conservation, activism, travel, science, art and adventure.

Ocean conservation and sustainability remain core motivations for Wavescape and its partners at the festival. The Save Our Seas Foundation is proud to be a supporting sponsor for the event.

Ross Frylinck, who founded the Wavescape Surf Film Festival in 2004, says: "We have been noticing a shift from land-based conservation to ocean and more generally water conservation. We can no longer assume there will be clean water to surf and swim in and that there will be a wide variety of fish to eat. Our scientists tell us that unless we make better choices today, the increasing pressure on our marine ecosystems from overfishing, pollution and climate change will have far-reaching and, in some cases, devastating consequences for our life on earth. As this reality filters through, we are likely to see blue become the new green."

The Festival will take place at various venues around Cape Town between 28 November and 17 December:
