Hammerhead sharks, for example, possess the largest brain of all shark species, while manta and devil rays have the biggest and most advanced brains among elasmobranchs. Yet, despite decades of research, many parts of their brains remain a mystery. Every day, scientists uncover something new about how sharks experience the world.

Graphic showing the range of shark senses. Illustration by the Ocean Conservation Research.

Olfaction: Sharks’ Super Sense of Smell (and Taste)

Imagine having a nose and not even using it to breathe! Well, that’s exactly what sharks do. Sharks have a great sense of smell and taste, called olfaction. Their paired nostrils, or nares, are separate from respiration, and in some species, are connected to the mouth, which contains the taste buds. This sense helps sharks track prey, detect mates through pheromones, and navigate across oceans during long migrations.

Sharks can detect even the smallest traces of amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). Some sharks even swim in zigzag patterns to compare scents from each nostril, and some may lift their snouts above water to follow scents carried faster through the air. Olfaction is particularly important for migratory species that need to travel thousands of kilometres across the open ocean.

Shark Vision Explained

Sharks’ eyes are surprisingly similar to ours: they have a lens, cornea, pupil, retina, and iris. However, most shark eyes sit on the sides of their heads, creating two blind spots, one in front of the snout and one behind the top of the head. Vision is crucial in clear water, helping sharks locate prey, but in murky waters, many sharks rely on their other senses.

Can sharks see colour?

Like humans, sharks have rods and cones in their eyes. Rods allow them to see in low light, while cones are responsible for colour vision. Most sharks have only one type of cone, which means they don’t perceive colour in the same way humans do. Instead, their vision relies heavily on rods, making them highly sensitive to contrast, brightness, shape, and movement, perfect for navigating in low-light or murky waters.

They have a special feature called the tapetum lucidum, a layer of mirrored crystals behind the retina that reflects light back through it. This enhances their vision in low-light conditions, allowing sharks to see up to ten times better than humans in dark, murky, or even clear water.

Did you know that sharks have eyelids, but they don’t fully close? This leaves their eyes exposed during mating, territorial fights, and hunting. To protect them, sharks use two strategies:

(1) The most common method is using the nictitating membrane, a transparent layer that covers the eye (though not all species have it); (2) For those without it, like white sharks, they perform ocular rotation, rolling their eyes back just before an attack.

Pressure Detection

Sharks sense pressure differently from mammals. This includes hearing, mechanoreception, and the remarkable ability of electroreception.

Hearing

In the ocean, sound is simply a vibration you can feel. While humans use ears to hear and skin to touch, sharks use a sophisticated system of ‘hair cells’ and water-filled canals to ‘feel’ sound. Sharks have no outer ears, only a small opening behind each eye, and are highly sensitive to low-frequency sound vibrations. Some species can even pinpoint the exact direction they come from.

Mechanoreception

Mechanoreception includes touch as well as the remote hydrodynamic process using the lateral line system and other sensory pores on the shark’s body. The lateral line is made up of a row of small, open pores leading into a water-filled canal system lined with hair cells, known as neuromasts. They run (one on each side) from the tip of the tail along the side of the body to the top of the shark’s head. There are also additional series of lateral lines around the head and mouth, and sometimes scattered elsewhere along the body. Pressure changes in the water are transferred through the pores into the canal, causing the tiny hairs to move and send nerve impulses to the brain, which can interpret these signals as prey, predators, or other sharks, whether received in combination with other stimuli such as sight or smell.

A hammerhead shark, showing the lateral line system. Photo by Giuseppe Mazza.

Electroreception

Electroreception is perhaps the most extraordinary shark sense and has no equivalent in humans. It is the detection of the tiny electric fields emitted by living animals and inanimate objects.

The Ampullae of Lorenzini are special sensory organs (pores filled with conductive jelly) around the snout of the shark, used to detect prey at close quarters. They detect minute voltage changes and send signals to the shark’s brain. Hammerheads excel at this, likely because they have more ampullae than any other sharks due to the shape of their head, allowing them to precisely locate prey buried in sand. Sharks can detect electric fields as weak as a millionth of a volt, which is why they sometimes bite cables or metal objects on the seafloor.

A shark, showing the Ampullae of Lorenzini. Photo from Apex Shark Expeditions.

Electroreception is also used by the embryos of egg-laying sharks to detect approaching predators and respond by freezing, and it helps sharks orient themselves using the Earth’s magnetic field, an ability that is especially important during long, transoceanic migrations. Some scientists are even concerned that electromagnetic fields produced by offshore wind farms, while important for combating climate change, may disrupt these behaviours.

So, as you can see, sharks are far more than what you see on TV. Their extraordinary senses, efficient anatomy, and highly evolved brains make them some of the most fascinating animals in the ocean.
