A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is an area of coastline or ocean that is specially protected for the benefit of people and nature.<\/p>\n

On 24 October 2018, the South African government approved the declaration<\/a> of 20 additional Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in our country! These MPAs will allow for further development of ecotourism and provide access to sustainably managed resources for small-scale fisheries.<\/p>\n

The proposed MPAs are:<\/p>\n

Addo Elephant National Park<\/p>\n

Agulhas Bank Complex<\/p>\n

Agulhas Front<\/p>\n

Agulhas Mud<\/p>\n

Aliwal Shoal Offshore<\/p>\n

Amathole Offshore<\/p>\n

Benguela Bank<\/p>\n

Benguela Mud<\/p>\n

Browns Bank Corals<\/p>\n

Browns Bank Complex<\/p>\n

Cape Canyon<\/p>\n

Childs Bank<\/p>\n

Namaqua Fossil Forest<\/p>\n

Namaqua National Park<\/p>\n

Orange Shelf Edge<\/p>\n

Protea Banks<\/p>\n

Robben Island<\/p>\n

SE Atlantic Seamounts<\/p>\n

SW Indian Seamounts<\/p>\n

Port Elizabeth Corals<\/p>\n

Isimangaliso Offshore<\/p>\n

Uthukela Banks<\/p>\n

The 20 new MPAs will come into effect in 2019 and will complement the 23 existing permanent coastal MPAs. Ocean protection within South Africa\u2019s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will increase from 0,4% to 5%.<\/p>\n

The identification of the new areas was based on 12 YEARS of biodiversity planning and research! This mammoth effort was led by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI<\/a>) and Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA<\/a>) in collaboration with many partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n

MPAs are much more than just protected areas\u2026 They are the building blocks that enable the ocean to continue to provide all its critical economic, environmental and social benefits.<\/p>\n

Here is a wonderful tool<\/a> that allows people to digitally \u201cexplore\u201d each of the new proposed South African MPAs, and to learn about its location, habitat, and what benefits it can provide.<\/p>\n
