We\u2019d love to.<br \/>\nWait, for how many children? Around 700?<br \/>\nOK. And what age range? 6-13?<br \/>\nWe have 20 minutes?<br \/>\nGreat. See you then!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2026Gulp\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes to tell 700 children aged between six and 13 at The Grove Primary School all about marine conservation, False Bay and sharks? Challenge ACCEPTED!<\/p>\n<p>We had a wonderful morning there and left a school full of excited, enthusiastic future shark experts and marine conservationists. But we also learnt a few things! <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9255\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 4608px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported\/DSCN0126.JPG\" class=\"fresco\" data-fresco-caption=\"\" data-fresco-options=\"thumbnails:false\" ><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/imported\/DSCN0126.JPG\" alt=\" The Grove Primary students listen keenly as they learn about our sharks\" width=\"4608\" height=\"3456\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9255\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Grove Primary students listen keenly as they learn about our sharks<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Here are my top five tips for keeping a hall full of young people engaged:<\/p>\n<p>1.\tVISUALS! FILM! MUSIC! They appeal to different age groups and engage people, helping your topic really come alive. (One wonderful clip we showed comes from Save Our Seas Foundation-funded researcher Lauren De Vos. Do yourself a favour and watch it here: <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/53831195\">https:\/\/vimeo.com\/53831195<\/a>)<br \/>\n2.\tAsk your audience questions and wait for answers. Yes, even a hall full of 700 children!<br \/>\n3.\tDon\u2019t be afraid to shake up your standard approach and try something new.<br \/>\n4.\tBe enthusiastic \u2013 it\u2019s contagious. Even if you are nervous or you are not all that sure how your talk is going to be received, give it all you\u2019ve got.<br \/>\n5.\tMake sure that at least one other person is familiar with the presentation. You never know what\u2019s going to happen (traffic jams, accidents, laryngitis!)<\/p>\n<p>Here is an excerpt from the lovely email we got from The Grove after our visit:<br \/>\n\u2018A HUGE thank you from me and the whole of The Grove Primary for the wonderful talk Eleanor and Zanele presented at our assembly.
