These camps are run with the understanding that an interest in and awareness and appreciation of the marine environment are instilled through positive personal experiences of our magnificent coastline. A variety of fun and exploratory educational activities are combined with lessons and presentations over the course of a three-day residential camp. The camp programmes typically include rock-pooling, birding, beach ecology and marine health (among others), but always allow plenty of opportunities for getting wet and sandy and enjoying surroundings that are very different from the urban neighbourhoods that most Cape Town children know. The current South African reality is that many people simply do not have the resources to access this sort of experience in a pristine coastal setting, and so camps are run for groups from the city’s less-advantaged communities.
