The Marine Explorers Programme is a fun-filled, action-packed, two-week education programme held for young people during the school holidays. The programme is open to all Seychellois secondary students, who join after being selected by means of a competition or application form. During the two weeks, students spend a lot of time outdoors discovering the Seychelles’ coastal habitats and the animals that live in them. This is complemented by activities, presentations and games that build on learning about the habitats and animals by introducing the threats to our oceans and what we can do to reduce them. Regular snorkels during the programme improve everyone’s water skills and confidence so that even non-swimmers and beginner snorkellers can excitedly explore beneath the waves.
Sharks are a major focus of the programme, as students often start out with a less-than-positive attitude to them. The youngsters enjoy learning about these magnificent animals and their opinions change as we dispel common myths about sharks, explain the threats to them and describe just how important and generally awesome they are!
