Its wingspan often exceeds two metres in length and it weighs less than 1.6 kilograms, which enables it to soar continuously, only rarely flapping its wings. A frigatebird\u2019s bones are very light \u2013 only 5% of its total body weight \u2013 as they are filled with air. Its name derives from the name French mariners gave to the bird: la fr\u00e9gate, meaning \u2018fast warship\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11974\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1920px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Frigates-Figure-1.jpg\" class=\"fresco\" data-fresco-caption=\"\" data-fresco-options=\"thumbnails:false\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11974 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Frigates-Figure-1.jpg\" alt=\"BULLOCK kerryn - aerial pirates\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Immature great frigatebird.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is not the most striking bird to look at, but what the frigatebird lacks in beauty it makes up for in skill. It can track small, turbulent updrafts and ride them high into the sky \u2013 as high as 2.5 kilometres \u2013 and thus expends minimal energy when searching for food. While foraging, these birds move slowly (averaging 16 kilometres per hour) and, although continuously climbing and descending, they fly at an average altitude of 180 metres.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11976\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 988px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Frigates-Figure-2.jpg\" class=\"fresco\" data-fresco-caption=\"\" data-fresco-options=\"thumbnails:false\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11976 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Frigates-Figure-2.jpg\" alt=\"BULLOCK kerryn - frigates\" width=\"988\" height=\"661\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aerial acrobatics as a frigatebird steals food from another species.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Frigatebirds feed only during the day, with peaks in the early morning and late afternoon, and drop to the surface on average six times a day. Although they can forage over extensive distances \u2013 up to 600 kilometres from land \u2013 their inability to land on water means they spend these trips entirely in flight and only rest at terrestrial sites. They have so little waterproofing on their feathers that they would drown in minutes if they landed in water. Instead, they skim their prey off the surface and therefore rely on sub-surface predators such as tunas or cetaceans to force small fish and squid to the surface so that they can capture them. Frigatebirds are long-lived \u2013 the oldest recorded was 44 years old \u2013 and they become sexually mature at the age of 8\u201310 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11977\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1263px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/FrigatesFigure-3.jpg\" class=\"fresco\" data-fresco-caption=\"\" data-fresco-options=\"thumbnails:false\" ><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11977\" src=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/FrigatesFigure-3.jpg\" alt=\"BULLOCK kerryn - frigagebirds \" width=\"1263\" height=\"842\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frigatebirds harass a red-footed booby at dusk, trying to steal a meal from it.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On D\u2019Arros Island and St Joseph Atoll both the great frigatebird <em>Fregata minor<\/em> and the lesser frigatebird <em>F. ariel<\/em> occur. They can be found in tall casuarina trees, choosing their roosting site based on the seasonal wind direction. Their unwebbed feet are too small for walking on land, so they always perch.<\/p>\n<div class=\"picture centre\">\n<div id=\"attachment_12001\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1159px\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12001\" src=\"https:\/\/saveourseas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Figure-4.jpg\" alt=\"BULLOCK kerryn - aerial pirates frigates\" width=\"1159\" height=\"773\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Photo by Rainer von Brandis | Save Our Seas Foundation<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Frigatebirds also have a dark side: they are kleptoparasites, stealing food from birds of other species in behaviour that is also referred to as \u2018piracy\u2019, \u2018food parasitism\u2019, \u2018pilfering\u2019 or \u2018robbery\u2019. Most of their food, however, is taken from the ocean and kleptoparasitism is generally thought to supplement their diet. At dusk you can sit on the beach and watch their amazing aerial acrobatics, like fighter jets in an epic dog fight, as they harass, dive bomb and chase other birds. Manoeuvring at breakneck speed, they attempt to make their target regurgitate its catch so that they can scoop it up.
