The Academy by the Sea programme in Seychelles is now well underway; this ‘Summer Camp’ programme is designed to encourage students to find out more about the marine world and become involved in local marine conservation projects. The costs of the Academies are covered by the Save Our Seas Foundation which also award 12 scholarship grants to cover the food and transport costs for 12 lucky students on each phase.
The scholarships were awarded based on the results of a competition for essays or art-works (Posters or Cartoons) on ‘Conserving Seychelles Marine Life’. The entries were judged by the project leader from MCSS, Abi March with assistance from Abbie Hine from Save Our Seas who had a very hard job as the standard was very high!
The scholarship applicants all gathered at the National Library where the winning entries were exhibited and one lucky winner from each secondary school in the country was awarded their scholarship to the Academy for this summer holidays by Paul Millar from the Save Our Seas Foundation.
The first phase got underway on August 13th with 18 very excited students turning up at the class-room by the beach at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Beach to start two weeks of marine oriented fun and activities.
