One of the WE LIKE SHARKS goals is to raise awareness towards sharks’ sustainable consumption in the Algarve.

During August, thanks to Portimão Urbis and the Municipality of Portimão, we had the opportunity to be present in one of the most emblematic gastronomic festivals in the country - The Sardine Festival in Portimão.

A large-scale awareness action was undertaken during this Festival. WE LIKE SHARKS together with OCEAN2012, the Portuguese NGO SCIAENA and other entities, provided 50.000 placemats with shark-related educational contents.

Tens of thousands of locals and tourists, who savoured the delicious sardines during this 9 days festival, were informed about the importance of sustainable consumption of sharks, especially blue sharks and catsharks, which are still used on regional gastronomy.

In these placemats, the user could help a diver to discover the path through the drawing labyrinth to find the sharks. Along the way, awareness messages, such as “Pay attention to your fish stew” and “Avoid eating blue sharks and catsharks”, were written and aroused curiosity.

Finding the way and learning curiosities about our sharks

Previously to the festival, a meeting was held with all the participating restaurants in order to aware them not to use any shark meat in their recipes. The Festival had to be a Shark Friend Event!

Moreover, a booth promoting the WE LIKE SHARKS project, interviews and explanations were given at the Festival. Media coverage was also present - See SIC channel report here.

Together with OCEAN2012, we made a fish human shape, joining dozens of people at the festival, in order to send a message to our politicians towards responsible fishing and sustainable consumption.
