Not many Portuguese are aware of our sharks and what is happening with them! WE LIKE SHARKS mission is working towards Algarve becoming a shark friendly zone.
One of our first challenges is to change the negative perceptions people have about sharks and alert to the fact that these animals are in urgent need of conservation. A shark is worth more alive than dead!
Numerous meetings have already been held involving national and regional stakeholders in shark conservation, like the Portuguese institute for nature conservation and biodiversity, captaincies and marinas, environmental NGOs, diving centers and media.
Several reports have been streamed on prime time news on one of the foremost private TV networks in the country (S.I.C.) focusing on raising awareness about Sharks Conservation in Portugal, informing about threats like finning, as well as communicating the Project’s messages and goals.
The project’s Web is making the most out of the 2.0 generation of social web tools. We are already sharing shark information and allowing users to interact. WE LIKE SHARKS has been receiving very good feedback online, by engaging people and stakeholders in a meaningful way and creating valuable partnerships towards our goals.

Simultanously, the scientific viability study for shark watching/diving in the region is undergoing. We’ve been out at sea on three occasions out of 18 trips that we planned on this project.
