Shark, Ray and Fish Release Campaign
Florida
Key Objective:
To increase awareness of why and how to release sharks, rays and other fish and provide educational materials for easy release techniques.
Why this is important:
Anglers as a group need to be educated on conservation as well as why and how to release fish properly, especially for sharks, rays and other species at risk. In this way, they can be enabled to serve as ambassadors for the conservation cause. The aim of this project is to convert their impression of sharks, rays and other species to be released to a higher aim of why they should be released properly with the most chance of survival.
Background
Project leader Betty Bauman has spent more then 30 years networking in the marine and fishing industries to develop strategic partners who can extend this message to hundreds of thousands of anglers. She has always promoted conservation to people entering the fishing market, when they are learning and impressionable. To motivate these new users of the ocean resources to understand and practice conservation, the curriculum featured release techniques, marine stewardship, lifestyles of fish and conservation. This developed a market ripe for implementing conservation behaviors and projects. Her reach extends beyond this market due to the allies she has engaged in the project.
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of this project are as follows:
- The primary objective is to educate and increase awareness of release techniques for sharks and other fish. The programs are publicized by the home office via the website and publicity campaigns.
