Its been a really busy few months educating almost 100,000 learners at two of South Africa’s premier science events: SciFest Africa and National Science Week.

Our interactive shark exhibit “Shark World” and robotic 3.5 m great white shark, affectionately known as “nibbles” have been a huge success in dispelling some of the myths surrounding sharks and portraying their critical role in the ocean environment. We also hope to introduce and encourage learners, who perhaps have never seen the sea before, to develop an interest and career in marine science.

The summer diving season is crazy at Sodwana with thousands of holiday makers, many of whom are divers visiting the area. It’s a great time to conduct a questionnaire survey and a total of 500 QA’s were collected over an 8 day period. During the summer months raggedtooth sharks visit the area to gestate and are a popular attraction for divers. The attached photo (taken a few years back) shows what atrocities can still effect sharks in the area

Finally made the first trip to Sodwana to survey divers and gain an understanding of the value and importance of sharks within the iSimangaliso World Heritage site. The trip was a real success with all of the dive concessionaires in the park in full support of the project. Over the next 12 months the goal is to have surveyed a total of 1,500 divers. I will keep you posted on our progress
